Definition
A job posting (or job ad) is the text published on a careers site, a job board or LinkedIn. It builds on the job description but speaks to the candidate: what they will do, what is expected, what is offered and how the process works.
What the law requires
Rules are multiplying. In Ontario, since January 1, 2026, public postings from employers with 25 or more employees must state the pay or pay range, disclose whether AI is used to assess applicants and say whether the vacancy actually exists, without requiring Canadian experience. British Columbia also requires a posted pay range. Other jurisdictions, such as several US states, have similar pay transparency rules. See our 2026 HR compliance calendar.
Good practice everywhere: state your response time to candidates, then keep it.
Concrete example
An accounting clerk posting in Toronto from an 80-employee employer states the pay range, the AI-use disclosure for screening, the fact that the vacancy exists and the expected response time. Candidates know what to expect before they apply, and the employer meets the Ontario requirements.
