Definition
An ATS, or applicant tracking system, is the core software of recruiting. It receives applications, stores resumes, organizes candidates by job and by stage in a pipeline, and keeps a history of exchanges and decisions.
Most ATSs add features around that core: resume parsing, job multiposting, interview scheduling, team collaboration and reporting. Some also include AI-based candidate matching.
Why it matters
Without an ATS, applications scatter across inboxes and spreadsheets, and it becomes hard to know who is waiting for an answer. A good ATS makes the process visible, which is the first condition for answering every candidate.
For a complete guide (features, selection criteria, costs), read our ATS guide.
Concrete example
A 40-employee business in Halifax receives applications by email and tracks them in a spreadsheet. Once it moves to an ATS, every application lands in one place, every candidate has a visible stage, and a quick look is enough to see who has been waiting for more than two weeks. That visibility is what makes answering everyone realistic.
